Rod Rothacher sent us in Nov 2009 this portion of a review he wrote for the Petersen Museum's magazine.
[Pete Lyons is not associated with THE SPEED ODYSSEY by Ardennes Productions mentioned in the review]:

DVD REVIEW: CAN AM THUNDER & CAN AM: THE SPEED ODYSSEY
Duke Video and Ardennes Productions respectively

The Can-Am series of the 60s and 70s was, for many, the epitome of what auto racing should be: A no holds barred, “run what ya’ brung” travelling circus of technology and horsepower that ultimately collapsed under the weight of its own freedom.

"Can Am Thunder" lacks the stock Can Am footage of "The Speed Odyssey," and as a byproduct works a little harder. That’s a good thing, as a wealth of interesting stories, images, and information takes the place of racing footage, giving the film a less gritty, but more cerebral feel. The silver bullet in "Can Am Thunder’s" gun is author Pete Lyons' commentary, and it’s his expertise that really brings the stories of these racing pioneers to life. Lyons' talent lies in the details, providing personal anecdotes to the stories he weaves. The images provided are first rate as well.

It’s fitting that a racing series based on technological freedom roared to the life during an era when individual freedoms were being pursued as well. Both "Can Am Thunder," and "Can Am: The Speed Odyssey" capture the flamboyant series, but from different angles. Each DVD is strong in its own right, but if you have the funds, you might want to get both. Together, these films give the Can Am buff everything he or she might desire.
